In a significant reversal of its position, France announced on Friday that it supports granting Palestine the status of a full member of the United Nations. The move represents a major step in the Palestinians’ long-standing quest for international recognition.
France seeks full recognition of the Palestinian state
At a special session of the UN General Assembly this Friday, France joined the overwhelming majority of countries to adopt a resolution calling on the Security Council to favorably consider the Palestinian candidacy.
Although the adopted resolution does not guarantee immediate membership to Palestine, it nevertheless states that it meets the required criteria and recommends that the Security Council reconsider its request a priori favorably.
The General Assembly’s vote, despite its symbolic nature, reflects growing international support for a Palestinian state.
The resolution was actually approved by 143 countries, including France, and only 9 negative votes, mainly from the United States and Israel, opposed the decision.
The result illustrates growing global solidarity with the Palestinians, despite Washington’s continued opposition to their UN membership in the absence of a negotiated peace deal with Israel.
According to French Ambassador Nicolas de Rivière, “It is time for the United Nations to act to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through a two-state solution.“. Although Paris unequivocally condemns the attacks by Hamas, it calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and opposes the ongoing Israeli offensive in Rafah.
Towards full recognition of a Palestinian state?
Although it does not yet allow Palestine to become the 194th member state of the United Nations, the resolution passed on Friday gives it important new rights and privileges.
From September, Palestinians will be able to sit among member states, submit proposals and fully participate in UN conferences.
These diplomatic advances, combined with broad international support, strengthen the prospects for full UN recognition of a Palestinian state.
However, the road remains strewn with obstacles, chief among them opposition from the United States, which is threatening to use its veto power in the Security Council again.
After all, only a negotiated political solution can bring a permanent end to the conflict and pave the way for Palestinian accession. France, with its vote and its renewed commitment, intends to actively contribute to this together with the international community. What remains is to turn the awakened hope into concrete actions for peace.
